A city can have millions of inhabitants and still fail to make anyone feel like they belong

A city can have millions of inhabitants and still fail to make anyone feel like they belongBecause cities also build a brand. Not just when they launch a campaign, present a new identity, or seek to attract tourism and investment.

They build it every day: in how you are welcomed, in how easy or difficult it is to get around, in how public spaces are cared for, in whether you can recognize yourself in its culture, its neighborhoods, and its way of growing.

A city can say many things about itself, but beyond what it promises, it leaves a mark through how it made us feel.

That’s why a place’s brand doesn’t begin with a logo. It begins with the experience: in housing, transportation, safety, cleanliness, cultural life, community, and the real opportunities it offers.

And perhaps we also need to incorporate more of a female perspective into how we imagine and design our cities: a perspective capable of making them more human, friendlier, more attractive, and more connected to the daily lives of those who inhabit them.

This week we celebrate World Habitat Day, a good opportunity to remember that the future of cities depends not only on grand urban plans, infrastructure, or promotional campaigns, but also on the quality of the experience we are able to create for those who live, work, visit, and build relationships within them.

Communication can attract attention. Experience is what makes someone want to stay, return, or speak highly of a place.

At TOTEM Branding, we see this in every destination project: the strongest territorial brands are those that manage to unite narrative and reality, those that not only promise a way of life but do everything possible to sustain it.

A city can have inhabitants. But when it manages to generate pride, belonging, and community, it begins to become something much more powerful: a true brand.
